Jane C.R. (I Burn & Speed Bumps)

I Burn

She is an open mouth and large belly. She is vicious smiles behind a white veil and a green dress with yellow dots splattered at the base. Her essence burns through your skin, muscle, bone, and when you run from her, when you try to flee, Etna’s breath finds you and her lava soon after.

Speed bumps
“I thought this road was cleared!” She hit the roof as the Humvee jostled suddenly. "Sergeant said it was!”
“Stop the car!” The door opened and she glared at the camo-wearing driver. She turned and looked out over the mountain they were perched on, the eery landscape of severed arms, legs, and gaping human faces.

Unmasked
Her fried hair was jagged under the black hat; the evidence of scorching torture.
“Almost ready?” her brother called, “Mother wanted perfection. Everything needs to be looked over.”
She looked at her natural rugged reflection on the polished gold; bleached white teeth the only remaining falsehoods. She would leave the pageant trophies on the grave.
How Do I Go On
He watched her in the final moments. She screamed and squeezed his hand. Her face contorted like he had never seen.
“It will be alright” he whispered, trying not to be sick. His love locked eyes and he knew it was over.
“It’s a girl Mr. Barghton. Congratulations.”

She smiled, motioning for the baby.

Shaken
Kate woke to picture frames falling all around her. She stepped over the broken glass and went to find her son. Terrified by the sight of his empty bed, she ran downstairs and was surprised to find the source of the shaking.
“Jake, how on earth did you crash the car into the house again?"
Prepared
I looked down at my hand, my weapon of choice poised and at the ready. I glared at all the enemies surrounding me. I would take no prisoners. I would be the best.
“Okay, you can begin.”
That was the signal. I clicked the top on my pen and started to write the exam.

The Odds are in Your Favour
“How could you cheat?” Ashley cried from behind the door of their shared bathroom.
“I don’t understand. What did I do wrong?” Judah pleaded from the other side.
“You stole my money and took advantage of my resources,” Ashley said.
“Look, I’m sorry.”
“I need to leave for a bit.”
“You’re overreacting, it was monopoly!”

I See It Now
I paced the room, fuming. Dad hit us one too many times. We had enough, leaving for good.
“I have been pinched, pawed, clawed, man-handled—what happened to you?” My brother put his hand on my shoulder. He was deathly pale, like last I saw, and his face was bruised.

            “Merely a brush with death.”

Her Escape
The knock came late, at midnight.  He opened his door, recognizing her even with her face hidden by knotted wet hair.  Her school bag was hastily packed-- she had been rushing.
“Why are you here?” He asked.
She met his gaze, a bruise on her cheek now visible to him.
    “I need somewhere to stay.”

Accident Prone
“It was supposed to be simple!”  His new manager crossed her arms. “You were to stack those jars and then work at the cash register.”
He stared sheepishly at the wet floor.
“How were you able to explode all five hundred of those cereal boxes,” she shouted, “and set fire to the entire produce section?”
